Machiel has managed the lab since May 2013. He is key in the creation and support of our inspiring research environment. One of his main responsibilities is figuring out new ways to further enrich the possibilities of the MAPLAB. He has a leading role in the research & development of software or other tools, and procurement of equipment. He has developed a training trajectory for lab coaches together with Joris. He is currently training the lab coaches on the job: running our workshops and labs. Furthermore he is responsible for the wellbeing of space, equipment and software used in the research.
“When all the pieces of the puzzle come together and create an experience that did not exist up until that moment, I step back and smile.”
There is a lot you can do alone, but there is even more you can accomplish in a team. A large chunk of Machiel’s work consists of combining, communicating and shaping environments in which great things can be accomplished. He sees MAPLAB as a space of possibilities waiting to happen.
Machiel is also an artist, datavisualisation expert and creative coder. He is fascinated by the creation of unstable systems where the input of a user gives energy to the system, enabling it to create a unique interactive experience and communicate it’s own unique story back to the user.
He graduated cum laude as Master Digital Environment Design at the Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti in Milan, Italy in 2008. He obtained his Bachelor of Art and Technology at HKU in 2003. Machiel is one of the founding members of media collective Z25.org.
